Ander Smith, nephew

Perhaps in previous posts I've mentioned how much I enjoy my weekly volunteer stint at ruby's nursery school. It gives me a bit of my teacher fix as well as a window into her little life when I'm not around. It resembles what I imagine the life of a pinball must feel like – always happily bouncing from one thing to the next. That's Ruby, in a nutshell.

One of the other reasons I enjoy my friday morni gs at the nursery school is because one of my 2 nephews, Ander, also attends the school and is in the same class as Ruby. This is nice for me for a number of reasons. For starters, it's fun to be uncle drew. Additionally, living, as I do, in a female dominated environment, I'm grateful to have a few moments to spend with a male member of the family. The Lego blocks. The trucks. That kind of stuff. It is a welch change of perspective for me.

And then, of course, there is the individual himself. Ander is quite the specimen. I've seen him spend 25minutes pushing wood chips around with a shovel. I've sat with him and held pieces of paper out, at arms length, so he could cut away at them with scissors. I've built towers with him that reach almost a meter in height. My point? The boy has focus and persistence. Which isn't to suggest that my kids don't. But it's a different kind with him. A slow and steady confident and determined sort of approach. And it pairs up so nicely with the laugh you get from him when he knocks over that tower. Quite a privilege to have the time with him as well as my own kids.
