Since the weather has turned nice I have taken to dispatching Ruby and Charlotte into the backyard a few minutes before I am ready to leave for school in the morning. It gives me a moment to catch my breath, do a small amount clean up after breakfast, and get Arden ready to go. And, of course, it gets the kids outside and moving first thing in the morning -Which is always a good thing.
It's been raining for the past few days and the ground is pretty wet. Last night it rained again. One of my favorite things about the rain is that it brings up the worms. Worms are fascinating to me. Seriously – they are incredible. They have four hearts. They have no teeth. They eat their own weight every week. And a population of worms can double its size in approximately 4 to 6 weeks. I actually have a few thousand red wiggler compost worms in the backyard. Some of them in large Rubbermaid bins. Some of them in a homemade backyard composter. We save up our kitchen scraps and every once in a while the girls And I head out to the backyard and feed the beasts. Since first bringing the worms home Charlotte has been completely willing to pick them up and inspect them. A quick look at Ruby's body posture in this picture is all you need to tell you precisely how she feels about worms. The worm on the end of the stick that Charlotte is holding is not one of my red wigglers – it is a dew worm that called up last nigh during the rain. Charlotte told me that she found it on the driveway and she was, dutifully, putting it back into the garden. I guess she decided to have a little fun with it first…
