My iPod

Lately I've taken to checking on ruby before I go to bed at night. I wish I could say that this was for some reason related to paternal goodwill. It isn't. Usually I Try to avoid going back into the room once the hatch is sealed for fear of waking them up. But I've been more motivated lately because ruby has taken to falling asleep listening to my iPod. Specifically listening to the excellent story “the library lion” on my iPod. Or, perhaps i should say, on the device formerly know as my iPod. She hasn't started calling it her iPod yet. And when she does I'm screwed because you know Charlotte is going to ask “where's my iPod?” but I've pretty much given up on ever listening to anything on this device again. A while back, I started letting go Of this item. I think it may have been last summer – right before road trip season. At that time, I loaded it up with all the Raffi I could get my hands on. Its also when the kids books on tape first found their way into my life. And, at the time, it was a good decision because a little kids music goes a long way. Especially when there is enough on there that the two older ones can have a little bit of choice when it comes to selecting the listening material. And especially when everybody can sing along. And especially when the kids start getting excited about listening to Feist. Anyway – since that time, there has been some significant “creep” in terms of the content you can actually listen to on my iPod and now, if it isn't something that all of us can enjoy, then this little orange gem (the iPod – not the 2 year old) doesn't have room for it. All those subway rides, the runs through the Cedarvale ravine, the solo walks to the grocery store with the wagon, the late nights sitting by the campfire in the middle of the winter in the back yard – all water under the bridge. The device has been repurposed. And I'm sure that this is not a unique phenomenon amongst parents. I remember when I first started using some of my dad's tools for things that I wanted to do. And of course I asked to use car my fair share of times. Anyway – I can't say us begrudge her the time with the iPod. As someone who totally enjoys falling asleep listening to a story, I fully support her use of it and hope she will soon broaden her horizons (as it stands she nearly has the book memorized). I suppose I just Didn't see it coming at 2.5.
