Company picnic

Hil's company picnic took place this past Saturday. Camp Brain generously rented out the Camp Robin Hood site for the day, put out a very nice spread, and opened up the facilities to us for the full day. It was nothing shot of spectacular.

As luck would have it, the camp installed a new diving board the day before we got there. And it had plenty of spring to it. I've never travelled so far by diving board before. And, what's more, Charlotte had the opportunity to go swimming with her buddy Rachel in the morning when we arrived and Rachel, being an experienced camp robin hood camper, was more than willing to show her the ropes. Or the pool, as the case may be. Rachel took a huge leap off the diving board and Charlotte, being highly motivated to keep up, went right behind her. It was amazing to watch her land in the water, swim up to the surface and make it over to the side of the pool completely unassisted. I've talked about progressive pull before and it was out in full force on Saturday.

Then there was archery. I'm not sure if you are supposed to give a bow and arrow to an almost 3 year old. To be honest, I had my doubts, but ruby, being highly motivated to keep up, wasn't about to just watch others have all the fun and she insisted in getting in on the action. Thinking back to my own days at camp, I regret to admit that I never really gave archery it's due. But man oh man if I don't love it now. There is something remarkably satisfying about the whole experience. Maybe it's the twang of the bow string or the thwack of the arrow hitting the target. Maybe it's the simple prospect of hitting the bullseye. Maybe it's the whole part where, for a few brief moments, you get to imagine that you are sneaking through the forest tracking your prey. Maybe I just have a thing for Robin Hood. Who can really say for sure… What I can say for sure is that when you pop the balloon that is taped to the target and the archery instructor gives you a prize feather, you feel a little pleased with yourself. And you want to do it again.

Regardless, both Ruby and Charlotte enjoyed themselves thoroughly and, just in case it didn't come through already, so did I!!! What better place to spend a day with your family than at camp!
