Snoring beauty

What you hear in this post is the sound of Charlotte, now six years old, snoring away at the end of a very eventful birthday. Complete with Rice Krispie squares made by Hil to take to school, a solid play in the park after school, new books, dinner with her Aunt Cate, extra stories & songs, an incredibly delicious birthday cake, phone calls from far and wide, and a great celebration overall.

Hil and I can hardly believe that Charlotte is 6. There are moments when we can barely recall life before her. And others when it seems as though she has been a part of our lives forever. She can do so many things and she has grown in so many ways – it seems impossible that she was once a murmuring baby in our arms. But here she is, crashed out after squeezing every last minute out of her birthday that she could muster.  And despite the fact that her vocabulary is enormous, that she can now do the monkey bars entirely on her own, that she doesn’t need help anymore in the bath or brushing her teeth, that she can pick out her own clothes, ride a bike, speak and think in French, ask perceptive questions, ride the bus to summer camp on her own, and so so much more, despite all these things, she is, miraculously, so little, so innocent, so fresh in her perspective on the world, so eager to learn and try new things. She is incredible. And it’s truly wonderous to lie beside her and listen to her saw logs at the end of the day, having watched her grow in evolve in so many ways. Truly a privilege.
