We let the kids Chew gum when we drive on the highway. This started a while back when Charlotte was relegated to the third row of seats in our car. She quickly started complaining of motion sickness on long trips and we suggested to her that she try chewing some strong flavored gum to help solve this problem. I am not sure if the gum actually worked or if it was just placebo… But she stopped complaining so I'm not going to question it. Charlotte's legs are getting longer and so we recently made the decision to move Ruby into the third row of seats in the car. She is pretty happy back there, as you can see by the massive grin on her face in this picture.
Yesterday we headed out to the Smith family Christmas party. The trip in involves about one hour of travel time on the QEW. As we pulled out of the driveway Charlotte asked, as she always does when we pull out of the driveway: are we going on the highway? The answer was yes… but we didn't have any gum. I dashed back into the house and checked all the spots I could possibly think of where some gum might be and turned up back at the car empty-handed. There were a few groans from Charlotte but we got on our way nonetheless. About 25 minutes into the trip I turned around to look at things that were going on the back seat and noticed that Ruby's jaws were working away. I knew that I hadn't given her any snacks. And I knew that there was no gum back there. I was wrong. There was gum back there. Old chewed gum that someone had carefully wrapped up in the foil wrapper, and placed in the cup holder for later disposal. Truth be told, I am pretty sure that someone was me. Regardless, Ruby had found this tiny little treasure, peeled off the wrapping, and was happily chomping away in the backseat. And I wasn't about to stop her!
