Waking the dead

As I write this, ruby is asleep beside me in her bed. She loves her bed. She loves to nap. She loves to lie around and have her back and arms and armpits scratched. She is so completely cuddly. Despite the warnings to never wake a sleeping child – warnings that I have heard many times – this one is a night hawk and if we don't get her up by 3pm then she is awake until 11pm. And who needs that? Right now, it's 3:22pm and I've been trying to get her going for the past 15minutes.

You will notice that She still sleeps with a soother. We've been trying to curb this habit but it affords us some peace and quiet and a smoother bedtime so we still rely on it as a crutch. I am pretty certain that most of the problems we have as parents we create for ourselves.

You will also notice her permanently bruised forehead.

Finally, you should note that she has fallen asleep ontop of a necklace. I am looking forward to seeing the funny impressions that the metal chain will have left on her face. Today she was calling it her penguin necklace. Even Though the bird on the necklace is actually and owl.

I confess that, even though i know that for my own good and the good of the family I should try a little harder than I have been to wake her up – but when she is this peaceful and this content and this perfect and it's a Saturday afternoon, I can hardly bring myself to disrupt her.
