It's been ages since my last post. A week of vacation away from the iPhone will do that to a blogger. And the two weeks before that I was side bared. But lately, I've been feeling the need to get back to this project. So much going on and all. An incredible week of family vacation in Florida with hil's parents and grandmother. Arden on the cusp of walking. Ruby almost getting traded as bait to the first ice fisherman (fisherperson) I could find because she was driving me absolutely insane. Seriously – it was a close call for her. If he'd offered to throw in a beer and a few fillets to sweeten the deal…
About the ice fishermen – we are up at my parents cottage for a couple of days in the middle of march break. Pretty awesome to stand beneath the stars and look up at an entirely different sky than you get to see in the summer time.
Today we went for a long walk on the ice. It's over a foot thick – we checked – and it is a totally different and equally wonderful way to experience the lake. But the notable part of the experience comes from the fact that I had to whip the kids like sled dogs to get them out there and having fun. Okay – I didnt actually whip them but man oh man was it tough to get them motivated. They just didn't want to go and they we completely uninterested in making any kind of effort to get out there. This put me in a real dilemma of a situation. We don't get to the cottage that often in the winter and the frozen lake is cool and I want them to experience it. On the other hand, the incessant whining about getting them dressed and out there was enough to make me want to plant them in the closest snow bank.
So how do you know how much to push them when you know that if you can just get them going they will start to have fun but the barrier to getting going drives you bonkers to the point of wanting to quit. I admit to some ugly parenting moments today. And also to having a great conversation with Charlotte all about hypothermia and what we would do if we fell through the ice. A scary conversation to be having while walking around on the ice although apparently not one that phased Charlotte.
