Say yes to the dress.

For the past few months, I’ve been dealing with a serious internal conflict: when is it ok to wear a dress? I’m not asking for myself. If you are Ruby, then any day is a good day to wear a dress. Especially if it has stripes. Or sparkles. Or polka dots, or butterflies, or hearts, or flowers, or wavy lines, or candy canes, or teddy bears, or elephants, or bumble bees… But if you are me, and you don’t have much experience wearing a dress, then you are kind of tied to the notion that dresses are for special occasions. You don’t wear a dress when you are going to the park, or playing in the garden, or going for a bike ride, or going on a school field trip, or much at all really – dresses are for dressing up. And, come to think of it, maybe that is why she likes them so much. She loves dressing up so why not do it every day???

Up until very recently, I resisted the dress. I encouraged leggings, jeans, track pants, etc. because, in my mind, those are way more functional options. I admit defeat. I was wrong about the dress. It is entirely functional, gets dirty and washes well, and is good for all occasions and outings. Especially if you are headed to the playground to jump off the climber and roll in the dirt after school.
