One of the things that I'm enjoying about living in the country is our wood stove. Cleaning the ashes out isn't such a fun chore – but the heat from a fire sure is nice.

Our wood stove is… An older model. There is some kind of large metal plate in the top portion of the fire box that has, over the years, warped considerably and at the time of this project, it was so far gone that it was no longer staying in place inside the stove. So I took it out, believing that, since it was metal, I could heat it up and hammer it back into a flat piece of metal from its tented non-functioning shape.

Charlotte helped me to build the fire outside and we hung out for the better part of an hour while we got the thing red hot. It was quite a fun experiment and she certainly enjoyed banging away at it once it was ready. Happy to report that, one month later, it has just about retained its shape and is serving us well now that the nights have grown quite chilly up here and we have the fire burning on a regular basis. I wonder if she will want to shoe horses next.
