Onwards from Battumbang

The next leg of our journey began at 5 AM where we got in a taxi for the trip to Koh Rong Samloem. At the time I did not know that The journey would introduce me to my new favourite sandwich: tha Rattanak. Named after Mr. Rattanak, The owner of the very nice hotel that we stayed at in Battambang. It is a triple-decker on toasted bread with lettuce, mayonnaise, slices of boiled egg, and a slice of processed cheese.

The journey was expected to take eight to nine hours… And ended up taking about 10 hours in total. The traffic through Phnom Penh was outrageous and makes the 401 look like a Sunday drive. We ended up missing our ferry boat to the island and we’re fortunate enough to catch a ride with another company.

and then taxi boat to our final destination.
It was dark when we arrived and so we grabbed a quick dinner in the open air Hotel restaurant and then it was time for bed… But not before discovering our new friend Levon in the bathroom in our cabin.

Despite being experienced campers and accustomed to finding all manner of wildlife in camp bathrooms, finding a 12 inch long lizard on the wall right before brushing our teeth was a new experience for us. Pandemonium ensued. Thanking us for Harry Potter… He calmed us down and we got some rest after a long travel day.
