working at home, living the dream

I’ve been fortunate, over the years, to have had a number of interesting jobs. I’ve worked for a flower shop (as a street clown with a sandwich board – totally miserable), a baseball umpire, at an advertising agency, as a camp director, I’ve gone to graduate school, I’ve been a teacher. And there are few other things along the way. All the good jobs I’ve had, the ones that I really loved and thrived in, share a similar quality and this work at home life is no different. It has one thing in common with all of the other good work experiences I have ever had: at times it is awesome, incredibly fulfilling, and rewarding beyond belief, and sometimes its not – sometimes it is more similar to walking through waist deep mud on a portage with a 80lbs. canoe on your back and at other times still, it is so infuriating, so mind bendingly frustrating, so cut you to the core expose all your vulnerabilities beat you till your raw exaspirating that you just don’t know how you’re going to make it. I suppose it is like many other jobs in this way – highs and lows. I just wasn’t prepared for how high the highs were going to be and how deep the lows were going to go.

all that being said, i’m pretty sure that i’ve never felt freer. i’ve spent more time with my kids than i ever have in the past 4 years. i have more headspace for the things i really care about. i’ve built things in our house. i’ve gone to the park. charlotte is learning how to read. i cook a few times a week. it really is an incredible experience. i am living the dream.
