I studied children's early attempts at writing off and on through course work for nearly 2 years as part of my MA. I also dedicated a full summer to interpreting and decoding children's writing as part of a study I was involved in as a research assistant. And what you see here, which is, as best as I can recall, charlotte's second independent attempt at writing anything on her own, is a classic example. She got the word “chocolate” off the bag of chocolate chips in the baking cupboard and Hil helped her spell the word “both” all on her own. But the word “froot” she spelt all on her own. I will confess that I was extremely happy with her effort – vowels in the correct place and all. It's amazing to watch her brain at work!
