Types of materials used to build bridges – by Ruby

This is a blog post to answer my grandpa’squestion about what materials are used to build bridges. It is also for everyone else reading the blog who wants to learn about bridges.

Here are some types of materials that are used to build bridges

  • Bricks
  • Stone
  • Vines
  • Rope
  • Wood
  • Steel
  • Wire
  • Concrete

Stone and steel and concrete are better for building bridges that cross a big span. Span means the a distance that the bridge covers. It does not have to be over water. It could be over a pit or valley.

At elephant camp I crossed a bridge made out of wood and rope. Wood and rope are used for smaller bridges and bridges that don’t carry such a heavy load. Elephants are a heavy load but they don’t need to cross this bridge because they can cross the span by walking through the water.

In my next post I will write about different types of bridges.

  3. HI Ruby!
Very interesting thoughts about bridges! You are seeing many different kinds on your travels. Did you know that there are ones called covered bridges? When you cross over one of these it seems like you are going through a tunnel!
Perhaps when you get back Grandpa & I can take you to see one & travel through it. It would be fun to do this with you!
    Hugs to all!
