Know when to fold’em

On a cool summer’s morn

In a campground north of Jasper

I met up with my family

We were all itchy beyond belief.

So we took turns a thinking

And a’weighing out our options

Till mosquitos overtook us

And we began to speak.

I said: Kids I love to camp.

And for months I’ve dreamed of Jasper.

Of hiking in the mountains and sitting ‘neath the stars.

But the skitters are overwhelming

And the rain clouds are getting thicker

As much as I don’t want to

It’s time for moving on.

You got to know when to hold’em

Know when to fold’em

Know when to stay in Jasper

And know when to leave.

You can’t have fun a’hiking

Or sitting neath the stars

If the mozzies in the mountains

Won’t give you any peace.

Now every parent knows

That the secret to surviving

Is knowing what to throw away and knowing what to keep.

And every day’s a winner

And every day’s a looser

And the best that you can hope for

Is a decent full night’s sleep

So we finished breaking camp

And we headed into town

And we found ourselves some wifi

And looked for a place to stay

But the internet said no vacancy

And the road signs all said no vacancy

So we said good by Rocky Mountains

We’ll see you when we go the other way.

You got to know when to hold’em

Know when to fold’em

Know when to stay in Jasper

And know when to leave.

You can’t have fun a’hiking

Or sitting neath the stars

If the mozzies in the mountains

Won’t give you any peace.

  1. Drew, Kenny’s The Gambler was your bed time music for years. The philosophy in it obviously made a big impression on you! Too bad the skeeters ruined some plans.

  2. Just sang your song on the way back to the cottage after a HOT 🥵 day at the beach! Just wondering when the single with ukulele accompaniment is coming out on iTunes?
